In mineralogy, cordierite (or iolite in gemology) is a mineral, more precisely a cyclosilicate of aluminium, iron and magnesium.

It is known for its obvious pleochroism, that is a change of color depending on the direction from which it is illuminated, so much so that it was called dichroite ("two colors", in ancient Greek). When it comes as a gemstone, with a blue-purple color, it is called "iolite".

Iolite is a gemstone that, for its color and particularity, has been able to carve out its part in the gemological market over the years; it owes part of its fame to its blue-violet hue that earned it the nickname of "water sapphire".
